Inclusivity in Classrooms

"Inclusion is not tolerance, it is unquestioned Acceptance."

"Inclusion is not tolerance, it is unquestioned Acceptance."

"Inclusive classroom" - an extensively used phrase used in the Education system nowadays. But what is 'Inclusive classroom?
Inclusion is a mindset, a belief system. It begins with the belief that amidst the diversity, every child has strengths to build upon, interests to share & experiences to honour.
Let me put it in simple words:
"Diversity is having a seat at a table,Inclusion is having a voice &
Belonging is having that voice be heard."
But how can classrooms be Inclusive?
Basically Inclusive schools start by saying 'Yes'.
Proponents of Inclusive education believe that every child is capable of learning. So Inclusive educators value student differences & support their learning needs to the greatest extent possible. They believe that all students have something significant to offer in the classroom & that we really are better off learning together. The key mantra in such classrooms is basically - " I can do things you cannot, You can do things I cannot, Together we can do great things."
.....because as the saying goes....."Strength lies in differences, not in similarities."
Inclusion is not just a policy, it is providing the students with a flexible learning, while celebrating diversity & individuality of each.

In an inclusive classroom the teacher not only sets up physical opportunities for all students to look included, but the teacher makes students feel included through his/her choice of words & phrases as communication is the base of creating the foundation of inclusivity.
Making mistakes is a part of life. Children learn by making mistakes. We believe a classroom should be a place where a mistake is not to be feared but viewed as a learning experience. Classroom management is not about having the right rules, it's about having the right relationships. It's how we relate, speak, encourage , guide & care. With authentic Inclusive education students do not have to 'fit into' the preexisting conditions of the class. Rather environments are designed to provide the support & structures that every student needs to succeed. Consequently successful Inclusive Environments create a climate of cooperation & caring that value the processes of critical thinking, problem solving & learning together because in a differentiated classroom there is No 'One Right Way' to solve a problem. Though there are challenges to create an inclusive environment but there are several easy & accessible options to overcome these impediments effortlessly. And the easiest one is to be patient with the children.
A few strategies that we use to create Inclusive Environment are:

  • Curriculum is adopted , modified & supplemented to support unique learning needs.
  • Collaboration with specialists
  • Classroom Instruction is tailored to meet individual student need with a goal to increase ability to benefit from general education curriculum & instruction.

NEP 2020 has provided the schools with a great opportunity to enhance the scope of Inclusive Education by providing an accessible curriculum & appropriate training programs for teachers & students.
Parental participation is also extremely vital for the success of inclusion. For effective partnership there is a need of time and appropriate strategies. They can Meet the teacher, Attend the PTMs, Develop a communication strategy, provide information & evidence & Offer Constructive Feedback.
At SMCS, we never threaten, discourage or demotivate, We Engage, Inspire & Enrich our Marians to be dynamic, resilient 21st century leaders contributing to a sustainable global community. We strongly believe that "When Everyone is included, Everyone WINS."
